Proctored Final Information
The proctored final must be taken at either a college testing center, a Sylvan Learning Center, or the one approved online proctor. There are no exceptions to this rule.

Proctored Final Rules:

Please see the rules in your Final Exam Contract and Grade Report.

Proctored finals are generally taken inside the USA.   However, all students, including international students, can use the one approved online proctor. We also have a list of approved testing centers outside the United States that previous students have used in the past. Military personnel can take the final on most any base around the world. Please contact us to make arrangements. If you don't want to use the approved online proctor, it is the student's responsibility to make sure they have pre-approval for an outside testing site before enrollment. If you want to take the final in the US, and have to go out of the country for awhile, your course can be put on hold until you are able to come back to the USA. Just let us know and we will be happy to help. These directions will help you with the "Proctored Final Set Up" view:
To take the final, you must have steps 1 through 5 completed in the "Proctored Final Set Up" view. These step must be complete before the password can be sent to the testing center.

Tutorial for the "Proctored Final Set Up" link:

Step 1:   Pay for the course in full

The course must be paid for in full before you can take the final. If you are on the payment plan and want to take the final before the 2nd payment is due, please contact our office. You will need to give us permission to charge your second payment early.

Step 2:   Meet the prerequisite

This step has been cleared.

Step 3:   Finish all tests/quizzes

Once you have all the course work done, with the exception of the final, this step will be cleared.
If you just finished your coursework and steps 1-5 are now complete, we will send the password as soon as we check our proctored final tracker. If you have not received an email within 24 hours that your password has been sent, please send us an email.

Students with a course through Pearson or canvas need to let us know as soon as they finish their coursework. We will email your teacher for your grades and then update your account to clear this step. Please allow us at least 24 business hours to complete this step.

If you have already made an appointment with the testing center, make sure we will be in the office during the time that you need the password sent. We are on pacific standard time, and we open at 9 AM.   Please remember, when it is 9 AM in New York, it is 6 AM in California (pacific standard time). For example, if you are on the east coast and you finish your tests and quizzes at 8 PM and you email us to let us know you are done, we won't get that email until the next morning at 9 AM PST. So, if you are scheduled to take the test at 9 AM EST, the password won't be sent in time.   You also won't be able to call us, because it is 6 AM PST. Therefore, you need to make sure that we have enough time between the time you finish your course work, and the time the password needs to be at the testing center.

Step 4: Select/submit testing center

This step can be done any time from the first day of your class to a couple of days before you are ready to take the final.
First, check to see if we have already approved a testing site near you by going to our testing center locator. You can enter in just your zip code and the number of miles. This database is small and only contains locations where we have had previous students take finals. These locations are already pre-approved, so if you do find a location in this database, it will save time.

If you can't find a testing center using our testing center locator, then another testing center needs to be found and approved before the final test can be taken.
One of these three options below will help you find a testing center near you:

Note: Students are responsible for proctoring fees.
  1. Use our approved online proctor. We have an approved online proctor service that students can use if they have a web camera with their computer. This can be a laptop with a built in camera or a desktop with a web cam. This service charges $60 for group sessions and double for private sessions.

  2. See if you can find a center near you in the University of Maryland's list of alternative testing sites. Make sure you find one which says 'CBT', as our tests are computer-based tests. If there is a college on the list near you that says 'PBT', call them and see if they now are able to do computer-based tests.

  3. Take the final at your home college, or find a college near you.
Go to your nearest (or home) college's testing or assessment center, and ask to talk to the person in charge. Let them know you want to take a proctored final at their testing center. Ask if they can proctor your final, and what days and times they proctor. Ask if they charge a fee.

  4. Take the final at a Sylvan Learning Center. ( sylvanlearning.com )
Insert your zip code into the Sylvan Learning's web site and it will find all the locations near you. Sylvan does charge a fee for the testing service, but testing fees vary widely per location, so call a couple of locations and ask for pricing ahead of time.
If you found a testing location in our Testing Locator, enter it into step #4 in the "Proctored Final Set Up".
Note: the final cannot be proctored by a coach, or anyone else other than with a proctor in a college testing center/assessment office or Sylvan Learning Center.

Caution: Once the password has been sent to an approved testing center, you must take it at that location, or pay a $50 charge to change the password and set up for a new location. Therefore, it is very important to call the testing center and check the following before you submit your testing center choice:
  1. The site is still operational, and they have agreed to proctor your final.
  2. The testing center's available testing times work with your schedule.
  3. You have found out if they charge a fee, and if so, you agree to their terms. Many of the college testing centers do not charge a fee, but the Sylvan Learning Centers do. They are all independently owned, so one may charge $20 for the whole test, while another may charge $50 an hour. You just have to call around and check prices.
If you are unable to find a testing center in our locator, we will be happy to approve a new location for you. We only approve college testing centers and Sylvan Learning centers as locations to take your final. There are no exceptions to this rule. Since approving new locations is a time consuming task, requests that turn out to not be a college testing center or Sylvan Learning Center will incur a $50 charge. Therefore, before you enter the new location into "Submit a new testing center for approval", make sure this is not a coach or other non-approved entity. Otherwise, we are happy to get the testing center approved, free of charge.

Once you submit the testing center's information to us, we have to verify the testing site independently through the college's web site or Sylvan's website. If you send us Jane Smith at someCollege.edu, then we have to be able to search for Jane Smith on someCollege.edu's web site and Jane Smith has to come up as working in the testing or assessment center. We then make sure the phone number, and email address match. Once that is done, we have approval for the test site. Colleges that have an email with in the following format are approved right away without a delay: testingcenter@someCollege.edu
The 'testing' address, along with the .edu confirms it is a testing center at a regionally accredited college.

Step 5:   Sign proctor/grade disclaimer

Please read this document, agree to each part, enter your name and submit the form. This document will let you know what grade you will receive, based on what you get on the final. If your disclaimer just says "Not Possible" for each grade letter, then please send us an email. Don't sign the disclaimer until we make an adjustment on our end, and you are able to see where you stand in the class.
It is important to read all of this document and don't just check the boxes without reading each of the categories.
